Tanjung Lesung Set to Introduce Thrilling Skydiving and Aviation Tourism to Elevate Banten’s Tourism Landscape

The coastal paradise of Tanjung Lesung, located in the Pandeglang regency of Banten province, is preparing to introduce a groundbreaking dimension to its tourism portfolio. Known primarily for its serene beaches, marine biodiversity, and outdoor coastal activities, the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for Tourism in Tanjung Lesung is expanding into extreme sports and aviation tourism. Through a strategic partnership between PT Banten West Java (BWJ), the primary developer and manager of the enclave, and PT Bro Skydive Indonesia, the destination will soon offer visitors the rare opportunity to skydive while taking in panoramic aerial views of the Sunda Strait and Banten’s coastline.

The formalization of this ambitious project took place in Jakarta, where executives from both entities inked a formal cooperation agreement. This alliance sets the stage for the comprehensive development of skydiving operations, sport aviation, and specialized aviation tourism within the designated zones of Tanjung Lesung. By integrating high-adrenaline aerial sports with established coastal leisure offerings, stakeholders aim to reposition the region as a multifaceted, premier destination capable of attracting both domestic thrill-seekers and international adventure tourists.

Strategic Partnership and Infrastructure Development

The integration of skydiving into Tanjung Lesung’s tourism ecosystem is not merely a promotional concept; it is backed by substantial infrastructural investments. The aviation tourism initiative will heavily leverage the existing Salakanagara Airport situated within the Tanjung Lesung enclave. To accommodate the technical and safety requirements of skydiving and sport aviation, PT BWJ has committed approximately 9 hectares of strategic land dedicated entirely to these aviation-related activities.

Upgrades to the airfield are already being planned and coordinated. According to project outlines, the technical enhancements will include the creation of a specialized landing zone, the expansion of the existing apron and taxiway, and runway adjustments to guarantee maximum safety standards for aircraft operations and parachute landings. Kunto Wijoyo, the Head of Salakanagara Airport and concurrently the Director of Operations for BWJ, detailed that the runway will undergo an extension of approximately 200 meters. Additionally, dedicated facilities within the airport’s hangar complex will be constructed to house the administrative offices and equipment staging areas for the skydiving operators.

These infrastructural developments reflect a calculated effort by regional developers to diversify revenue streams and enhance the value proposition of the SEZ. While Tanjung Lesung has historically drawn tourists seeking weekend getaways, marine exploration, and resort-style relaxation, the introduction of aviation sports caters directly to the burgeoning demographic of experiential and adventure travelers.

Synergy Between Skydiving and Coastal Ecotourism

Industry leaders emphasize that the unique selling proposition of the Tanjung Lesung skydiving experience lies in its seamless blend of air and water activities. Fanny Kusuma Dewi, President Director of PT Bro Skydive Indonesia, highlighted that the geographical layout of Tanjung Lesung provides an optimal environment for multi-activity itineraries. Unlike landlocked drop zones, jumpers in Tanjung Lesung will descend toward a coastal backdrop characterized by clear waters, lush greenery, and island clusters.

"Beyond its natural beauty, Tanjung Lesung possesses the foundational infrastructure required to support robust skydiving operations," stated Fanny. She elaborated on the post-jump experience, noting that visitors can easily transition from an adrenaline-pumping aerial descent to a wide array of marine leisure activities. Once safely on the ground, tourists have immediate access to jet-skiing, sport fishing, snorkeling, and island-hopping excursions across the surrounding waters.

This holistic tourism model aims to increase the average length of stay for visitors. By offering a dynamic itinerary that bridges the skies and the sea, developers anticipate higher tourist expenditures and enhanced satisfaction rates, positioning the region to compete more effectively with established international adventure tourism hubs.

Accessibility Boost: The Role of the Serang-Panimbang Toll Road

One of the historical hurdles facing tourism development in Tanjung Lesung has been overland accessibility from Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. Situated in the westernmost part of Java, the journey to Pandeglang traditionally involved long hours navigating congested provincial roads, deterring spontaneous weekend travelers. However, the ongoing development of the Serang-Panimbang Toll Road is projected to fundamentally transform the accessibility matrix of the region.

The infrastructure project, divided into multiple strategic sections, is progressing toward critical completion milestones. Section 3A, connecting Cileles to Bojong, is officially targeted for completion by November 2026. Meanwhile, the entirety of the Serang-Panimbang Toll Road is projected to be fully operational by the second quarter of 2027.

Once the toll road network reaches full operational capacity, the vehicular travel time from Jakarta to Tanjung Lesung is anticipated to drop significantly, compressing the journey to approximately two to two-and-a-half hours. Transport analysts note that this dramatic reduction in travel friction will likely trigger a surge in weekend tourism, making Banten’s southern coast a highly viable and competitive alternative to the heavily trafficked Puncak or Bandung corridors in West Java.

Project Timeline and Immediate Rollout Plans

Despite the grand scale of the infrastructure overhaul, project stakeholders are moving rapidly to ensure that initial operations commence ahead of peak seasonal holiday periods. PT Bro Skydive Indonesia and PT BWJ have established an aggressive timeline, aiming to introduce the skydiving experience to the public by the second week of December 2026.

This target launch date has been strategically chosen to capture the influx of travelers during the year-end holiday season. "We are aiming for readiness and full operational status by December. We want to open up trials and availability right before the end-of-year holidays begin," Fanny affirmed.

Initial phases of the project will focus on baseline skydiving operations utilizing the upgraded Salakanagara Airport facilities, while secondary sport aviation and aviation tourism offerings will be phased in progressively as subsequent infrastructure milestones are achieved.

Broader Economic Implications and Regional Impact

The introduction of skydiving and aviation tourism in Tanjung Lesung carries significant economic implications for the wider Banten province. As a designated Special Economic Zone, Tanjung Lesung was created by the Indonesian government to stimulate regional economic growth, attract foreign and domestic direct investment, and create employment opportunities within the hospitality and service sectors.

The diversification into extreme sports is expected to create specialized jobs ranging from aviation technicians and certified jump instructors to hospitality staff specializing in adventure tourism logistics. Furthermore, local small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including culinary vendors, local transport providers, and tour operators, stand to benefit from the increased foot traffic generated by adventure enthusiasts.

From a macroeconomic perspective, the project aligns with the national strategy of the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism to develop high-value, specialized tourism niches. By shifting focus toward sustainable adventure tourism and leveraging modern transport infrastructure, Tanjung Lesung is steadily transforming from a localized resort destination into a globally competitive center for sport aviation and coastal recreation in Southeast Asia.
